You’re moving into a new apartment or rental. You walk into the leasing office to sign your rental agreement but wait, as you’re skimming through it, what should you be looking out for? Here are three things every tenant should know before renting in Texas.
Rental Agreements
Your rental agreement is your contract with the landlord. Read it thoroughly before signing and don't hesitate to ask questions. Pay attention to details like rent due dates, lease terms, and the security deposit. Knowing your rights and responsibilities can save you from surprises down the road.
Maintenance & Repairs
Landlords are generally responsible for maintaining the property in a habitable condition. If there are issues like plumbing problems, electrical failures, or a broken AC during the hot summer, report them to your landlord. Document these requests in writing to have a record. If your landlord doesn't make the necessary repairs, you may have legal rights to address the situation.
Security Deposits
When you move in, your landlord may ask for a security deposit which is meant to cover any damages to the property. Document the condition of the property before moving in and take pictures to avoid any disputes when you move out. Landlords are required to return your security deposit within 30 days after you move or provide an itemized list of deductions. If you believe any deductions are unfair, you can challenge them.
